tldr; See the title, I have an SVG file that is an outline of the state of Utah with a transparent background. When I upload this file to Design Space the thumbnail of the uploaded file looks correct, however once I import into my project, it is imported as a solid black shape.
Full disclosure, I do not use cricut or know very much about it other than what I have read on the internet. I design and sell digital graphics. I do not design specifically for cricut or advertise as supporting cricut, but many of my customers are able to use my designs in their cricut projects.
Recently, I have been getting messages complaining about some SVG's I sell that are US State outlines with a transparent center, the messages often read like this:
Hi, I just downloaded the Utah state outline SVG file and when I load it into Design Space it is loading as solid black. I need them to be a cut file.
Like I said, I don't design my files for Cricut, but I still try to help make adjustments for my customers when I can. Naturally, I tried to re-create the problem. I set up a Design Space account and uploaded the file in question. As described by the customer, the file is loading into Design Space as a cut file but is solid black instead of having a transparent background.
I contacted Cricut support to inquire about what SVG formats they support (my files are made to meet the W3C standard). I had several back and forth messages with them, but mostly just received canned responses culminating in:
Unfortunately it'll fill inside when you try to just cut the uploaded images, can you try to slice and try to cut on same, click the below link and follow the steps for slicing. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.
Would someone be kind enough to ELIF a few questions I have regarding this problem?
- Is it expected behavior that an SVG file with a transparent background will receive a fill color when imported into Design Space as a cut file?
- If the answer to question 1 is 'no', then any suggestions on what I may need to change about the svg file in question in order for it to work correctly in Design Space? (I can provide more info about the file if needed)
- If the answer to question 1 is 'yes', is there a process or set of steps I can suggest to my customers to help them achieve what they want? (note, when they download my files I provide the image as SVG, PNG, and JPG)
Thank you in advance!
